Active Release Technique Q & A

What is ART?

ART is a patented soft-tissue and movement-based massage technique pioneered by Dr. Michael P. Leahy, a chiropractor for elite athletes. The technique is used to repair injuries to:

  • Muscles
  • Fascia
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Nerves

Dr. Leahy developed ART while puzzling over how to help his clients recover from soft-tissue injuries, get back into the game, and achieve their peak potential.

While watching their movements during athletic performances, he realized he should combine his knowledge of chiropractic and anatomy with insights he’d gained while studying engineering in the Air Force.

This led him to develop a groundbreaking method of pinpointing the source of soft-tissue pain and damage so that it could be repaired. Dr. Leahy subsequently developed ART, which he teaches to other health care providers during intensive training sessions.

Dr. Abercrombie is a certified practitioner in the ART method.

What conditions can be treated with ART?

Dr. Abercrombie uses ART to treat injuries and scar tissue that occur when you overuse your muscles. Some of the most common conditions that Dr. Abercrombie resolves with ART include:

  • Headaches and neck aches
  • Back aches and sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tennis elbow
  • Knee problems
  • Shin splints
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Prior injury that was not properly treated

Previous treatments for sprains, strains, and joint disorders focused on inflammation. But ART addresses the root of the disorders, improving and releasing scar tissue at the cellular level.

Dr. Abercrombie finds damaged areas by using his hands to identify textural changes in the soft tissue. Only physical touch can detect these changes; they're undetectable with an X-ray, MRI, or other imaging technique.

What happens if I don’t treat my soft-tissue injury?

Untreated injuries can be painful, may cause your body to compensate in ways that throw your spine out of alignment or otherwise compromise your well-being, and impair your ability to do your job. Some men and women even lose their jobs or careers because soft-tissue injuries prevent them from carrying out their responsibilities.

You don’t have to suffer from chronic pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in your muscles or joints anymore. Book an ART consultation with Dr. Abercrombie: You can call the dedicated staff at Back to Health Chiropractic or use the online booking form.
