Neck Pain Q & A

Why is my neck stiff and painful?

The part of your spine in your neck, the cervical spine, is the thinnest part of your entire spinal cord, and yet it must support and move your head. When your neck is healthy, your cervical spine can move forward, backward, side to side, up and down, and tilt with ease and without pain.

When you tense up your neck, shoulders, or arms, your muscles can shift the vertebrae in your neck out of alignment, a condition known as subluxation.

Vertebrae that aren't appropriately aligned can squeeze against sensitive nerves, causing pain and impairing your neck’s mobility. Muscles around the vertebrae may even start to spasm, which can pull things further out of alignment and cause more pain.

What causes muscle tension and subluxation in the cervical spine?

You’re more at risk for cervical subluxation and neck pain if you:

  • Have weak neck or shoulder muscles
  • Have weak core muscles that throw your spine out of alignment
  • Hold tension in your jaw, neck, shoulders, or chest
  • Have vertebral discs (cushions between vertebrae) that are deteriorated or ruptured
  • Have small bony growths on the edges of your vertebrae (bone spurs)
  • Have other skeletal abnormalities
  • Were in a car accident or suffered a blow to the head (whiplash)

Will my neck pain become chronic?

Neck pain that lasts for more than three months is considered chronic. You could be at risk for chronic neck pain if you're:

  • Female
  • Older
  • In poor health
  • Living in stressful conditions

You’re also at increased risk if you have:

  • Mental health issues
  • Given birth to more than three children
  • A history of lower back pain or neck injury
