Whiplash Q & A

What causes whiplash?

When you hear the word whiplash, you probably think of a neck injury caused by an automobile accident.

While car crashes are one cause of whiplash, any blow that throws your neck abruptly forward or backward to the point of injury can cause whiplash. Amateurs and athletes who engage in contact sports are especially to susceptible to whiplash.

Neck strains or sprains cause whiplash either. Strains are defined as damage to the muscles or the tendons that connect muscle to bone. Sprains are tears in the ligaments, which are the tough tissues that connect your bones to one another.

While you usually feel the effects of whiplash right away, sometimes it takes hours or days before symptoms appear, including:

  • Neck pain or tenderness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Tight, stiff neck
  • Inability to look over your shoulders
  • Headaches that radiate from the back of your skull to your forehead

Is whiplash serious?

Whiplash injuries may not feel severe, but if left untreated they stress your body and impair your health. More importantly, the blow or accident that caused your whiplash could also create a traumatic brain injury called a concussion.

What is a concussion?

The classic sign that you have a concussion is losing consciousness. However, most concussions don’t knock you unconscious. You can suffer a concussion without realizing it, so be aware of the possible symptoms, including:

  • Dizziness or seeing stars
  • Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
  • Headaches
  • Slurred speech or delayed responses
  • Confusion or amnesia
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting

Whenever you suffer a blow to the head or neck, you should seek immediate care.
